Worship Resources for Kids! Sunday May 31, 2020

Sprouts & Orchard Families! As you know, today we are continuing to worship online today! Since we are all home we want to share with you what we would have been teaching this morning in Sprouts & Orchard. You can use these resources to create a fun family time with your family! Reading and learning from the Bible as a family should be an important part of your family rhythm!

At NMBC we will be live on YouTube and the video will be shared on our website and Facebook page. We encourage you to view this service with your family. Take a picture of your family watching the service and post it on social media and share with us! You can watch, starting at 1015am, here: www.nmbc.ca/livestream

Family Activity: Whiteboard about Works

  • The point is to show that sometimes there is confusion about the things that Christians should do and the way the Christians should live. Using a whiteboard, make a list of things that Christians are supposed to do and ways that we are supposed to act. [Fruit of the Spirit is a good list if the children need help, add Christian practices like prayer, church attendance, bible reading, etc]. Read Ephesians 2:8-9 and explain that none of these things earn us anything! None of them earns our salvation - earns our sin being taken away, only faith in the grace God offers through Jesus death and resurrection does that. Ask: So that is the point of all the things on this list then? Why do we do them? As a child to come to the stage and read Ephesians 2:10 [which will be on screen]. Explain: Our works / good deeds / actions / Christian lifestyle do not earn our salvation from our sin - but they are a response to it. We do all of these good things not so that we earn Jesus taking our sin away - we do them because he has taken our sin away and we are now his followers.

Family Activity: Give the Gift of Grace

  • Explain Ephesians 2:8-9. Grace is Unmerited Favor. Grace is different that Mercy [though God is merciful as well]. Mercy is when you don’t get something you deserve. Grace is when you do get something you didn’t earn or deserve - which is the point of Ephesians 2:8-9.

  • Use the $5 analogy to explain Grace: Have your child come and sit with you and give them a gift, perhaps $5. Ask them why they were given the $5 [Did you work and earn it? Did you steal it? Did you sell something? Did you arm wrestle me and win it? Etc.] The point is that they were given it for no other reason than that the leader wanted to give it to them - a free gift.

  • As a family pick a neighbour and give them a gift. Perhaps write the words of Ephesians 2:8-9 on a card - you don’t have to. If your neighbour asks, explain that you’re giving the gift to them simply because you care about them.

Family Activity: Books of the Bible Game

  • This is a much loved game from the Orchard! Did you know that there are 27 books in the New Testament? If you Take 28 cups or blocks you can make a pyramid! Put the name of each New Testament book on one cup or block and write New Testament on the cup or block that will end up on top. Then stack! Take a look here for more info.

One Big Story - Memory Challenge - May

  • “Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.” [Matthew 28:19]
