Reflection & Discussion
Warm-up. Do you love change or hate change and why?
Pray and ask God to bless your study.
Read Psalm 102:24-27; Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 6:17-18; 13:8; James 1:17 and discuss how they reveal the doctrine of God’s immutability. (He is complete and perfect in himself from eternity to eternity, having no potential that is not already fully realized. God cannot be more infinite, more loving, or more holy tomorrow than he is today.)
God is immutable (unchanging in his essence and purposes) and at the same time he is not immobile (stagnant) but active in his creation. How does the analogy of the sun and its rays help in grasping this truth and how is it especially seen in the incarnation of the eternal Son (God becoming 100% human without ceasing to be 100% God)?
How does knowing that God’s goodness, love, holiness, power, and wisdom never change bring you comfort and stability? How might it be a caution to you as well?
All analogies break down at some point. God is not inert and inactive like a rock, but at the same time when it comes to the immutability of God, Scripture is replete with references to God being our Rock (Psalm 18:31; 61:2; Matthew 7:24-27). How has the attribute of God’s rock-likeness been a blessing to you?
What human relationship, possession, or circumstance do you cling to for stability instead of to our unchanging God? How reliable have you found that “substitute rock” (idol) to be? What things help you to keep Christ as the Rock of your life?
