Reflection & Discussion
Warm-up. What are you looking forward to in 2021?
Read Matthew 3:1-17 Ask God to bless your study.
Why is it significant that John's first preaching point in preparing the way of the Messiah had to do with repentance?
What is the difference between false and true repentance?
How are some church attenders similar to the Jews who counted on family heritage or religious status for salvation?
How would you counsel someone who professes faith but shows no genuine marks of repentance and love of Christ?
How would you explain to a non-Christian that a "judgement and hellfire" sermon actually expresses God’s love?
Explain why John's baptism at the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, and Jesus’ final words at the end of Matthew about baptism, highlight its importance in the church.
How are all three members of the Trinity present in Matthew 3:15-17? Why was Jesus baptized if he had no sin?
John told the religious leaders of his day to “produce fruit in keeping with repentance” (3:8). Compare this with Matthew 12:33-35; Acts 26:20, and Titus 1:16. What do these passages have in common?
