Reflection & Discussion
Warm-up. If your life was a sandwich what kind of sandwich would it be?
Read Daniel 3:1-30 Ask God to bless your study.
1. We learned that in their new culture Daniel and his three friends were pressured to compromise their way of life. Can you relate? If so, what are some things you have done to remain true to your convictions? How has God honoured you in this?
2. What instruction and encouragement can we glean from Daniel’s praise to God in verses 20-23 of chapter two (2:20-23)?
3. Given their situation in captivity, what rationalization might Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego have for just giving in and complying to the king’s decree to worship the golden image?
4. Read Daniel 3:13-18. How do you think you would have responded to Nebuchadnezzar’s decree? What 21st century idols tempt you to compromise your faith and convictions?
5. Like the fourth person in the fiery furnace, have you felt God’s presence with you in the midst of a difficult trial? If so, what was it like and how has it affected you?
6. Fire in the Bible is often a metaphor for suffering. How is it that suffering can either make a person better or bitter? How does knowing that Jesus went through the fire of the cross for you, in order to save you, help you in your own suffering?
