Reflection & Discussion

Warm-up. For what celebrity would you stand in a big crowd for hours to see if he or she came to your town?

Read Matthew 21:1-11 Ask God to bless your study.

1. When Jesus and his disciples came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, the Savior sent two of his disciples on a special mission. What was that mission (21:2-3)? What was the significance of this action (21:4-5)?

2. Read Zechariah 9:9; Psalm 118:26, and Isaiah 62:11. How do these texts prophesy Jesus’ triumphal entry? Do you think the people at the time recognized what was happening? Explain.

3. The whole city of Jerusalem was stirred as Jesus and the crowds entered the city. What was the crowd’s question in 21:10? What answer came back?

4. What message do you think Jesus was giving as he rode into Jerusalem on a donkey? How does it illustrate Paul’s point in Philippians 2:7, that Jesus ‘made himself nothing’?

5. Discuss the ways Jesus’ kingship is displayed in this chapter. How can we be like King Jesus?

6. Why did the praises of the crowd so soon turn to shouts of ‘Crucify him!’ in 27:22-23? In the light of verses like Acts 2:23 and 1 Corinthians 2:7-8, how does the cross help us to understand the relationship between God’s sovereignty and our responsibility?

7. How will King Jesus’ first and second comings be different? In what ways does knowing this change your life going forward?
