Warm-up. Share an unexpected blessing from this week.

Read: Matt 13:1-3, 44-46, 53-58. Ask God to bless your study.

1. Parables are still an effective way to communicate truth. Have you ever used parables to share the gospel? If so, what was the response?

2. To what did Jesus liken the kingdom of heaven in these verses (13:44-46)? What are the points of comparison and contrast between the parable of the hidden treasure and pearl?

3. Why were the people of Jesus’ hometown “amazed” at him? What questions did they ask about him (Matt 13:53-58)? In what ways is the incredible treasure of Jesus hidden from people?

4. In both parables, what did the men do immediately upon discovering the hidden treasure and the expensive pearl? How valuable would a treasure have to be for you to do the same?

5. If asked for your top three priorities, what would you say? If someone looked at your calendar, your bank account, and your screen time, would they agree with your stated priorities?

6. What evidence is there in your life that you value Jesus like those in the parables valued the treasure and the pearl?

7. It says in v. 44 that “in his joy” he sold all that he had to gain the treasure. Why is ‘joy’ so important in obeying the Lord?
