Reflection & Discussion
Warm-up. What would you like most for the New Year?
Read: Jeremiah 38:1-13. Ask God to bless your study.
1. What is the historical context of Jeremiah 38:1-13? What was the message that Jeremiah had been delivering to the people of Judah at this time? How did the leaders of Judah respond to Jeremiah's prophetic message, and why?
2. Evaluate King Zedekiah's leadership based on his response to the officials' actions against Jeremiah. How do the reactions of King Zedekiah and the officials reflect their faith and values?
3. Why do you think Zedekiah chose to meet with Jeremiah secretly? What does this say about his fears and motivations? How do you balance the fear of people’s reactions with the call to speak the truth, as seen in Jeremiah?
4. How does Jeremiah demonstrate faith and perseverance in the face of adversity? Can you share an example from your life where you had to persevere through adversity?
5. What do you think motivated Ebed-Melech, the Cushite, to intercede on Jeremiah's behalf?
6. How do the actions of Ebed-Melech demonstrate gracious conduct, courage, and compassion?
7. How can we today emulate the virtues displayed by Ebed- Melech in advocating for justice and compassion?
8. In what other ways can the themes and lessons from Jeremiah 38:1-13 be applied to our personal situations?
