Reflection & Discussion
Warm-up. What food to you enjoy on a wintery day?
Read: Genesis 32:22-32. Ask God to bless your study.
1. Some say you need to focus solely on self-dependance to be successful. Is this biblical (2 Cor. 3:5-6; Phil. 4:13; Jn 15:5)?
2. What does the Lord’s willingness to wrestle with Jacob tell you about God? What kinds of wrestling with God are good, what kinds are bad, and why? Does Jacob’s life highlight any decisions you need to make regarding your own wrestling?
3. God transformed Jacob’s deceptive ways into a tenacious faith, and used his wrestling to produce perseverance. How might God transform your flaws into strengths?
4. A name expressed one’s identity. What change in character did Jacob’s name from “deceiver” to “God-wrestler” represent?
5. What other Bible characters received new names? Discuss the reasons for such name changes. What kind of “new name” would you like God to stamp on your soul?
6. If you are a believer in Jesus, share how you came to faith. How did the Lord bring about a crisis of conviction? Where and when did you encounter God, and by what means? How has he changed you?
