Warm-up. What do you like to do to relax?

Read: 1 John 1:1-4. Ask God to bless your study.

1. Why is John qualified to testify about what he proclaims? (Compare 1 John 1:1 to John 20:1-9,19-31).

2. What does John insist is true about the life (Jesus) in 1:1-3? Why is it crucial that “the life appeared” to humanity on earth?

3. Compare and discuss 1 John 1:2 to the way Jesus defines eternal life in John 17:3. Jesus is both fully divine and fully human, why was this important to John? What difference does it make to you that Jesus is eternally one with the Father?

4. John gives two connected reasons why he is proclaiming his message to his readers. What are his reasons (1 John 1:3-4)? Why does John’s complete joy depend on his readers understanding and embracing the message about Jesus?

5. Accepting John’s message about Jesus puts people into fellowship with God and each other. What evidence of that fellowship and love can you observe in your own life and experiences with God and other believers?

6. What would John (and you) say to someone who believed that Jesus was not a historical person who was born and walked on the earth, and to whom we are to pray and trust for salvation, but is only a legend and not Lord?

7. Read Hebrews 2:14-18 and discuss how Jesus Christ (“the Word of life”), in becoming one of us, helps us in our suffering.
