Reflection & Discussion

Warm-up. What do you most enjoy about spring?

Read: John 8:12-59. Ask God to bless your study.

1. What do Jesus’s promises in John 8:31-32, 51 mean? How will those who keep Jesus’s word never experience death?

2. How is keeping Jesus’s word different from the Pharisees’ attempts to keep the law of Moses? Why should anyone believe Jesus’s promises?

3. What did Jesus mean by, "Everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin" (John 8:34)? How does sin enslaves us? What is the consequence of being enslaved to sin (John 8:24)?

4. After Jesus said, “before Abraham was, I am”, why did some of his hearers “pick up stones to throw at him” (John 8:58-59)?

5. Some say that there is no verse in the New Testament that says "Jesus is God," with the implication that there is no clear claim to his divinity to be found in its pages. Yet this is not the case. Look up and discuss the following passages about the deity of Christ that are either explicitly asserted or strongly implied - John 1:1, 14, 18; John 20:28; Titus 2:13; 2 Peter 1:1; Acts 20:28; Hebrews 1:8.

6. Jesus is fully man. What are some ways that this encourages you, especially as it applies to your salvation? Jesus is fully God. What are some ways that this encourages you, especially as it applies to your salvation?

7. Just as Abraham rejoiced to see Jesus’ day, so we can rejoice to see the day of Christ’s second coming. How can we cultivate that hope? What difference should it make in our lives?

Take a moment to pray and thank our divine Jesus for coming to earth and becoming fully human for our eternal salvation.
