Small Group Notes

Warm-up. If you had it within your power, who would you elevate from "rags to riches" and why?

Read: 2 Samuel 9:1-13

Pray God blesses your study time together.

  1. What commitment did David remember when he was established in the kingship of Israel? (2 Samuel 9:1) Share why you think (or don’t think) most people today really believe in the importance of keeping a commitment (covenant)?

  2. Why was it especially important to David to find the surviving members of Saul’s family (2 Samuel 9:1, 3, 7)? Why did Mephibosheth have reason to be afraid of David?

  3. Where did David find Jonathan’s son living? (2 Samuel 9:4-5) What’s the meaning of that place? What’s it like spiritually to live there?

  4. What attitude did Mephibosheth show toward David when they met? (9:6) What promises did David make to Mephibosheth? (2 Samuel 9:7) How did Mephibosheth expect to be treated by David? (2 Samuel 9:8) In what ways are we spiritually crippled and helpless before a holy God?

  5. What kind of treatment did Mephibosheth receive in David’s house? (2 Samuel 9:11) On what basis did David treat him this way?

  6. How does David’s commitment to Mephibosheth parallel God’s loving kindness towards us in Christ Jesus?

  7. Practically speaking, what unfulfilled promise from the past can you take steps to fulfill today?
