Reflection & Discussion
Warm-up. What evidence today is there in your life of genuine faith in the Lord?
Read Matt 1:1-6a; Joshua 2:1-24; 6:17, 22-25 Ask God to bless your study.
Read Hebrews 11:6. What does this verse teach us about faith? Read Ephesians 2:8-9. What is the source of faith?
Matthew mentions only five women in his genealogy of Jesus. What is significant about Matthew 1:5a, and why is it important?
The Lord had repeatedly promised to give the land to Israel. Was Joshua faithless, then, to send spies to scout out the land? Why or why not?
What did Rahab risk by lying to the king’s messengers? What did she have to lose? Do you think Rahab was wrong to lie? (Optional: See Exodus 1:15–21; Ephesians 4:25.) What would you have done in Rahab’s place, and why?
Read Hebrews 11:31 and James 2:25. What do these New Testament verses tell us about Rahab? What did Rahab believe about the Lord, and why (Joshua 2:8-11)?
What dGod had commanded that all the Canaanites be destroyed because of their wickedness toward each other and their rebellion against him (see Deuteronomy 7:1-5; 9:1-5). What became of Rahab and her family when Israel finally took Jericho (Joshua 6:17, 22-25)? Why was Rahab the prostitute’s family saved from destruction? What does this tell you about God?
According to John 17:15, 18 and Ephesians 4:17-24, to what extent should a Christian make the kind of complete break with their past sinful life that Rahab made?
Why is it important to you that God welcomes people like Rahab? Who are the Rahabs that you encounter? How open are you to welcoming them into the community of God’s people?
