Discussion
Warm-up. Hearing the word, Pentecost, what comes to mind? Read Acts 2:1-4, 22-41. Ask God to bless your study.
Why was it appropriate that the events of Acts 2 occurred on Pentecost, the day when Jews celebrated the giving of the covenant under the Law of Moses (Jeremiah 31:31-34; Romans 7:6; 2 Corinthians 3:6)?
How did the Holy Spirit’s outpouring prove that Jesus is alive (John 7:37-39)? In what ways was it a great ‘advantage’ for the disciples that Jesus ascended back to the Father and sent the Holy Spirit (John 16:7)? How is this an advantage for you?
Read Luke 1:15; Acts 9:17; Acts 4:8, 31; Acts 13:9 on how Luke uses the phrase “filled with the Spirit”. Discuss what specifically the Spirit’s empowerment helped them to do. When has God enabled you to do something that you didn’t think you could do?
Being “filled” with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18) is probably the biblical term that most strongly implies that an encounter with God’s Spirit is not an all-or-nothing event. Share why you agree or disagree with this statement.
How could the same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead not make a huge difference if he is also living and residing inside you now? Some say it seems like the Spirit comes and goes in my life. In what ways does Acts 3:20 speak to this? How is Jesus’ invitation in John 7:37 the answer?
What steps can you take this week to be better prepared to seek the refreshing and empowerment of the Holy Spirt?
