Reflection & Discussion

Warm-up. Share about some favourite foods that reveal whether you’re a sweet or salty person.

Read Matthew 5:13-16 Ask God to bless your study.

  1. What comes to mind when you think of the darkness and decay of the world?

  2. Salt is not distinguishable in a pool of saltiness nor is a flashlight effective in a lit room. Jesus said that you are to be salt and light in the world. In what ways can we be salt and light outside the walls of the church?

  3. Jesus spoke about our being a city on a hill for all to see. How are we, collectively within the church (racially, culturally, socio-economically, etc), able to see evidence that we are salt and light, preserving and projecting the goodness of Christ?

  4. In what ways can exposing the decay and darkness as salt and light in the world bring persecution? How do Jesus’ words in Matthew 5:10-12 help to overcome such fear?

  5. What happens when salt and light are not used as intended? Share some areas where your “salt” may have lost its savour or your “light” may be hidden. What can you do today to change?
