Reflection & Discussion
Warm-up. Do you tend to be a rule keeper or rule breaker?
Read Matthew 5:17-20 Ask God to bless your study.
How does Jesus’ view of Scripture (Matt 5:17-20) help you with doubts about the historicity and truthfulness of the Bible?
What are some ways Jesus fulfilled the Law and Prophets?
The righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees was an external righteousness. What does it mean in Matthew 5:20 when it says that our righteousness must exceed the scribes and Pharisees (John 3:3-5, 13-15; Ezekiel 36:25-27)?
How does teaching that no one need bother with the Law miss the purpose of the Law and water down what Christ did?
What commandments do people tend to “relax” these days? What is the opposite of “relaxing" commandments?
As a believer, does the Sermon on the Mount ever sound too daunting? How does the work of the Spirit and the truths of the gospel encourage your heart (Romans 8:2-4)?
In what ways did Jesus say a person can be ‘great’ in the kingdom (Matthew 5:19) and how are you aspiring to this?
Scripture was certainly central in Jesus’ life. Do you think he expects it to be so in our lives? If so, how can it be?
According to Psalm 19:7-14 and 2 Timothy 3:16-17, how does God's Word help us to live godly lives?
