Reflection & Discussion
Warm-up. Who has been an example of greatness in your life?
Read Matthew 18:1-5 Ask God to bless your study.
When comparing all the gospel accounts, what picture is portrayed for us concerning who is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven (Matthew 18:1-5; Mark 9:33-37; Luke 9:46-48)? Why does Jesus use a child to illustrate greatness?
After Jesus answered his disciples on who is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven in Matthew’s account, what was the warning that proceeded (vs 6-7)? How does this apply to our lives today?
Why is it so difficult for us to put into practice selflessness — to serve rather than to be served?
How does pride affect our relationship with God and others (1 John 2:15-17)? How can we let go of our pride?
In John’s account of Jesus serving breakfast to the disciples (John 21:1-13), what is the disciples response to the realization it was Jesus? Why was that important? What is Jesus teaching to his disciples by serving them breakfast?
Discuss what Paul meant in his letter to the Philippians 2:5-11, in particular verses 6-7.
If Christ “emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant”, what should be our posture towards our neighbours and fellow believers?
How will this study impact your week as you seek to serve and not be served in humility as a child? How should this truth affect our relationships?
