Reflection & Discussion

Warm-up. If you had to compare your function in the body of Christ to some part of the human body, how would you respond? A hand? An eye? A brain cell? A liver? Why?

Read 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 Ask God to bless your study.

1. Why is unity important in a local church? Describe a church that models unity and one that demonstrates division.

2. How is a local church like a human body? Do you feel like an important part of the body, or an insignificant part? Why?

3. Read Romans 12:3-13. What additional gifts to those found in 1 Corinthians 12 are mentioned and what does this passage add to your understanding of their proper use?

4. How do you discover your spiritual gifts? How important is the local church’s recognition of them?

5. How well is the body functioning in your life? Are you aware of needing and being needed by the Christians around you? Are you honouring the contributions of others? Do you suffer with those who suffer and rejoice with those who are honoured?

6. Paul mentions a number of practical consequences of Christ’s body such as inter-dependence (vv. 14-20), unity (v. 25) and sympathy with one another (v. 26). How can we give these practical consequences the emphasis they deserve?

7. Pray that we at NMBC will grow closer and stronger together as we willingly and humbly acknowledge both our needs and responsibilities as a local expression of the body of Christ.
