Reflection & Discussion
Warm-up. What household chore do you dislike/why?
Read Galatians 5:16-25. Ask God to bless your study.
1. From your own experience, describe what it means to live by the desires of the sinful nature. Explain what you think it means to live by the Spirit (See Romans 8:5-14).
2. How does the Spirit express his desires to us? How do you know if an internal prompting is from the Spirit of God or just your own thoughts?
3. Which sins from 5:19-21 do you think are most frequently tolerated among Christians today? Why do you think they are considered less serious than the others? Are they less serious?
4. What does the metaphor of “fruit” in contrast to “works” (5:19) tell you about how these good traits become a part of your life? (See John 15:1-8)
5. What is Paul’s solution to the conflict between our sinful nature and the Spirit (5:24-25)? What is the primary purpose of the Spirit and how does this help us (John 16:14)?
6. Look at the “works of the flesh” in vv. 19-21. Pick out two and think about how they are consequences of “over-desire”.
7. Pick a couple of the fruit of the Spirit from vv. 22-23. How are these products of truly believing the gospel of Christ?
8. Which “fruit of the Spirit” have you really been growing lately? What one or two do you most need to grow right now?
9. Which fruit of the Spirit are least celebrated within the church? What would these look like if lived out in church?
