Reflection & Discussion
Warm-up. When have you felt like an outcast and how did God help you with that?
Read Isaiah 56:1-8 Ask God to bless your study.
1. What just response does God expect from those whom he invites into his kingdom community of salvation (56:1-2, 4, 6)?
2. How can you seek to do what pleases the Lord rather than yourself and at the same time consider this a delight?
3. Why does the Messiah’s saving work in Isaiah’s prophecy make race, class, past history, and physical flaws no longer barriers to God’s community (Isa 56:1-8; Col 1:21-23; 2:13-15)?
4. How is Acts 8 (Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch) the best commentary on Isaiah 56:1-8? How can you apply this today?
5. Eunuchs and foreigners represented defiled people in ancient Israel, like prostitutes and tax collectors in Jesus’ time. Who might be the outcasts in our day that God wants you to reach and advocate for with justice and righteousness?
