Warm-up. What first comes to mind when you hear the words, the Ten Commandments?

Read Exodus 20:1-21 Ask God to bless your study.

1. Why should we study the Ten Commandments?

2. Why is it crucial to understand that God’s rescue/salvation from bondage (Ex 19) came before God gave the law (Ex 20)?

3. How is God revealed both in the giving of the Ten Commandments and in the content of the commandments? What application can you make from this revelation of God?

4. In what way is the first commandment (“You shall have no other gods before me." Ex 20:3) foundational for us in keeping the other nine commandments?

5. True freedom is enjoying the blessings of obeying God. In relation to the Ten Commandments, discuss what this means. How does John 10:10, John 8:32, and 1 John 5:3 support this?

6. How did Jesus’ coming transform the first commandment? How do these passages - Matthew 17:5; Philippians 2:10-11; 1 Timothy 2:5; Hebrews 1:3 - show this transformation?

7. Discuss how you might answer the two diagnostic questions intended to help expose idols in your life.

2. TRUST test: Who or what do you trust most?
