Reflection & Discussion
Warm-up. What are some of the names, titles and attributes of God that mean something to us as believers?
Read Exodus 20:1-21 Ask God to bless your study.
1. The most common translation of this command is, “you shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.” The word “take” can also be translated as “to lift up, to bear, and to carry.” Can you give negative examples of how we might “take” the Lord’s name in vain?
2. If not discussed in question one, what historical events has the global church been guilty of taking the Lord’s name in vain?
3. When God gave his Law to Moses, what was the purpose behind them?
4. Has that purpose change with the coming of Jesus as the Messiah?
5. When people use God’s name in vain, what is your typical response? How should we as Christians respond to someone who someone who “swears”?
6. Return back to the discussion of the various names, titles and attributes of God. Spend some time as a group praising God using these. People don’t have to do long prayers, and are encouraged to pray more than once using a different name, title, or attribute. Be specific what one you are praising him for.
7. Lastly, talk about how it felt to hear and share all of these names, titles and attributes.
