Warm-up. What aspects of our culture, or opinions of others around you, tempt you away from walking with God? What can you do to reduce or counter such influences?

Read: 1 John 2:18-27; 2 John 7-11. Ask God to bless your study.

1. According to John, what are the marks of antichrists? Why are the antichrists so dangerous? How can we use both Word and Spirit in the guarding against the spirit of antichrist?

2. Where do you see these things in 1 John 2:19, 22, 26 happening today? Why don’t antichrists remain in the fellowship of the church? Why do true believers remain in the fellowship?

3. What is the result of our anointing (1 John 2:20, 27)? Why does John say we do not need anyone to teach us (v. 27)? Does this mean we do not need teachers in the church?

4. Look at 1 John 2:24-25. What does it mean in practice to remain in the truth? Has there ever been a time in your life when the Holy Spirit made you aware of false teaching?

5. What is the difference (if any) between being discerning and being distrustful? How do you develop discernment without becoming spiritually paranoid of everyone and everything?

6. How do you determine what are core doctrines (worth dividing over if necessary) and which ones are secondary?

7. What does your relationship with the Church say about you?
