Reflection & Discussion

Warm-up. What summer plans do you have?

Read: 1 John 4:1-6; 3 John 9-12. Ask God to bless your study.

1. When you read through 1 John 4:1-6, what is the one word, phrase or idea that stands out to you and why?

2. What do you think John’s language of “beloved” (1 John 4:1) and “little children” (1 John 4:4) show us about his pastoral concern for the churches he is writing to?

3. John is warning against false teaching, but he does not say, test the teachers, but “test the spirits to see whether they are from God,” 1 John 4:1. Why do you think he says that and why is this significant?

4. How do you understand the practice of “discernment?”

5. What do you believe to be the significance of the doctrine of the “incarnation” as expressed in 1 John 4:2-3?

6. In what ways can we “confess” our belief that indeed Jesus Christ came in the flesh?

7. John writes, “he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world,” (1 John 4:4), what do you understand that to mean for your life?

8. We know little about either but how does John contrast Diotrephes and Demetrius (3 John 9-11)
