Warm-up. What convinced you to believe in Jesus?
Read: 1 John 5:1-12. Ask God to bless your study.
1. Why is the new birth, being ‘born of God’, so important (vv. 1, 4)? How does the new birth relate to repentance and faith?
2. What are the three tests that John gives in 1 John 5:1-5? Which of these three tests do you struggle most to live out?
3. Why are God’s commands not burdensome for those who are born of him (5:3-5)? Why must we maintain a connection between God’s love and his commands? What is the danger of separating them?
4. What are the keys to overcoming the world’s compulsion to fear, lust, pride, hatred, depression, and so on (1 Jn 2:14-17; 5:4-5)? How do you apply these insights to overcome the world?
5. People accept testimonies of human witnesses in a trial. Why is God’s testimony - through the Spirit, the water, and the blood - even more trustworthy (5:9)? How are the water, the blood, and the Spirit related to your faith?
