Warm-up. What are your earliest memories of prayer?
Read: 1 John 5:13-21. Ask God to bless your study.
1. Write down at least six things that John wants us to know or be assured of in 5:13-21. Then tell why each one is especially important for you to be certain of.
2. Compare 3:9 to 5:18. Why doesn’t the child of God practice sin? In 5:16, does John mean that we shouldn’t pray for those who commit sins leading to death? Or does he mean that we may, but a positive result isn’t guaranteed? How do you respond when you see a brother or sister committing serious sin?
3. How can we come to know God’s will and so have our prayers answered (5:14-15)? See also John 15:7. What role does prayer play in assurance?
4. Why can John say that we have everything we ask for (5:14)? How can this verse be abused?
5. How are we protected while praying for others (5:18)?
6. In what way is 1 John 5:21 a summary of the entire book?
7. Why is idolatry an issue still today, even in secular cultures? What are some of the “idols” that tempt you to primarily trust in them before and above the one true God?
