Warm-up. Why do most people dislike silence?
Read: Psalm 46:10a and Psalm 61. Ask God to bless your study.
1. Complete the following statement: My instinctive response to silence and solitude is . What does your response reveal about your desires, your fears, and your need to grow?
2. Jesus himself practiced the disciplines of silence / solitude. Read Matthew 4:1; 14:23; Mark 1:35; and Luke 4:42, and discuss what spiritual benefits Jesus derived from getting away?
3. How does observing Jesus’s retreats affect your perspective on scheduling time for your own daily/monthly/yearly retreats?
4. Share how silence and solitude can become habits of grace.
5. What similarities does fasting share with silence / solitude? How are the spiritual disciplines of journalling and silence / solitude mutually beneficial?
6. What is the ultimate goal in exercising spiritual disciplines like silence and solitude (Philippians 3:8)?
