Reflection & Discussion
Warm-up. What comes to mind when you hear the word, ’evangelism’?
Read: Ephesians 2:1-10. Ask God to bless your study.
1. Pastor Daniel shared from Matt Smethurst’s book, “Before You Share Your Faith” four memorable movements to share the gospel: the Ruler, the Revolt, the Rescue, and the Response. It can help us to have a good grasp of the gospel so we will be less fearful of what to do, or what to say, when God gives us opportunities to share it. Go over what each movement means.
2. Evangelism is a spiritual discipline not a spiritual gift. It is not reserved for those who are more outgoing any more than Bible study is reserved for those who are really studious. How can this reality motivate you to pursue growth in evangelism?
3. “Apathy in evangelism,” John Stott warns, “is downstream from neglecting one’s interior life: “Nothing shuts the mouth, seals the lips, and ties the tongue like the secret poverty of our own spiritual experience. We do not bear witness for the simple reason that we have no witness to bear… If the Bread of life has evidently not satisfied us, why should non-Christians suppose it will satisfy them?” Do you agree with Dr. Stott? Why or why not?
4. Jesus called his followers to be ‘fishers’ of people (Matt 4:19). How can we rescue spiritually dead corpses (Ephesians 2:1)?
5. Here are twelve verses for overcoming fear in evangelism - Psalm 56:3-4; Proverbs 29:25; Isaiah 8:12-13; 41:10; John 15:5; Acts 18:9-10; Romans 1:16; 1 Cor 2:1-5; 2 Cor 3:5; Galatians 1:10; 1 Thessalonians 2:3-4; 2 Timothy 1:7. (Theses verse would be great to apply to memory.) Read each and discuss how they can help you to overcome a fear of sharing your faith.
