Warm-up. Through training, what have you become good at? Read 1 Timothy 4:1-10. Ask God to bless your study.

  1. If you knew you had one year to live, how would your life be different? How about one week? Where’s the balance between an eternal perspective and long-range goals?

  2. How was Timothy to respond to these false teachings (4:6)? What is Timothy to avoid in 4:7? Why? What is he to pursue instead? How could he, and we, do this practically?

  3. What comparison does Paul make between "physical training" and "godliness training" in 4:8? How hard ("toil and strive" 4:10) is it for you to keep the proper balance? Explain.

  4. What are some “good” (not sinful) hindrances to discipline you struggle with? How do you find the balance between being disciplined and being driven? Jesus was disciplined, but never seemed to be in a hurry. How can we do likewise?

  5. Read 1 Corinthians 9:24-27. What are the elements of Paul’s spiritual training programme? What part does self-discipline play in true spirituality? Think about how important self- discipline is in your life.

  6. What do Psalm 19:7, Colossians 3:16 and 1 Peter 2:2 tell us about the way we must ‘nourish’ ourselves on God’s Word?

  7. What specific actions can you schedule into your daily routine to nurture your godliness? How can you keep watch over your life and doctrine this week?
