Warm-up. What things discourage you most? Read Psalm 42-43 Ask God to bless your study.

  1. How beneficial is church for you? How did the Psalmist feel about worshiping with God’s people? (Psalm 42:2, 4)

  2. How is God described in this psalm? (Psalm 42:2, 5, 9)

  3. What were some contributing factors that lead the Psalmist to despair? When have you felt deserted by God or friends? When have you questioned God?

  4. How did the writer of this Psalm defeat his despair? In times of discouragement how do you pour your heart out to God?

  5. How does remembering the past faithfulness of God and his promise of “lovingkindness" help you when all seems hopeless?

  6. Where did the Psalmist get his guidance? (43:3) How might you apply this to your life?

  7. What does this psalm teach us about the privilege of freely worshiping God? What does it mean for you to “Hope in God"?
