Warm-up. How does your use of money reveal what you value most? Read Jonah 1:17-2:1-10. Ask God to bless your study.

  1. What do we learn about Jonah’s story and seemingly unanswered prayer and the ultimate purposes of God?

  2. Look at Psalm 139:7-8. In what ways would Jonah have agreed with these words?

  3. What do these verses in Jonah 2 tell us about the value of memorizing portions of Scripture (like the Psalms) by heart?

  4. In Jonah 2:8, Jonah is admitting that it is possible to make an idol out of good things rather than the Lord himself. What are some things (idols) in life from which you draw an inordinate amount of self-worth, personal value, or even a sense of security and you would be devastated if you ever lost them?

  5. What are some ways people fool themselves about their own ability to handle life apart from God’s help? What are some dreadful things the Lord has used to awaken you to the truth of your need for him? Share a time when you have looked at a difficulty in life as a sovereign act of loving, Fatherly discipline.

  6. How has your own thanksgiving for your salvation led to a greater desire to share the gospel with unbelievers?
