I. God’s Jealousy Is Angry Love
II. God’s Jealousy Inspires Our Love
Reflection & Discussion
Warm-up. When you hear the word jealous what comes to mind? Read Exodus 20:1-6 Ask God to bless your study.
1. God is love (1 John 4:8), but love is not jealous (1 Cor. 13:4), so how can God be jealous (Ex. 20:5)? Isn't this contradictory?
2. What provokes God’s jealousy (Psalm 78:58)? What does our use of time and money say about our relationship with God?
3. How would you describe the difference between godly (divine) jealousy and sinful jealousy? In what ways did King Saul’s relationship with David manifest the latter (1 Samuel 18:5-7; 19:1-2, 11, 15)?
4. How did Paul use jealousy positively in 2 Corinthians 11:2 and negatively in 1 Corinthians 3:3? How is jealous close in meaning to zealous in a good way?
5. Some accuse God of being needy. How do Acts 27:24-25 and Isaiah 40:14-15 refute this?
6. If our relationship with God is our top priority, then all our other relationships will be far better as a result. Explain why you agree or disagree with this statement.
7. How does the sacrificial death of Jesus on our behalf, even when we were (and at times still are) spiritually adulterous, highlight the truth of 1 John 5:3? How can we look at the Law of God, the Ten Commandments, romantically and devotedly?
8. How, like God, can you be jealous in a positive way for the spiritual well-being of others this week?
