Reflection & Discussion
Warm-up. What’s a favourite song/hymn and why?
Read Ephesians 5:15-21 Ask God to bless your study.
1. Paul commanded his readers to “be filled with the Spirit” (v. 18). See the following cross-references, and discuss what each teaches about who the Spirit is, how you become filled, and what the effects of that filling are - Luke 11:13; John 14:15-17; 14:26; Acts 1:8; 4:7-13; Romans 8:2-4; Ephesians 3:16. (NOTE: The verb be filled implies continual, habitual practice.)
2. Paul contrasted being “drunk on wine” with being “filled with the Spirit.” Think about how alcohol contributes to a state of drunkenness. How is being filled with the Spirit like, but also opposite to, being drunk? (See also Romans 8:5-14.)
3. What are some of the positives of people gathering for local kitchen parties, and how should our gatherings of worship and fellowship be even better in Christ, through the Holy Spirit?
4. In what ways do we daily drink with Jesus (John 7:37-39)?
5. Explain and discuss the phrase: “We tend to associate worship more with what we do than with what God has done.” Why is ‘what God has done’ to be our priority in worship?
6. It’s okay to have personal preferences in styles of worship, but why is it spiritually unhealthy to worship our worship?
7. What will you do in the next week to come under the influence and control of the Holy Spirit more?
