Warm-up. What kind of alarm wakes you up?

Read Luke 9:18-20; 1 John 1:5-2:2 Ask God to bless your study.

1. What are some erroneous views about Jesus’ identity that do not match up with Scripture?

2. How has our culture come to take sin lightly? How do we do the same? Why is it important to get our understanding of sin from what God says rather than from our culture?

3. According to 1:5-6, why is it a lie to claim fellowship with God if we “walk” (live habitually) in “darkness” (wickedness, error)? What does it mean for us to walk in the light?

4. What does a person walking in the light still need from Jesus (1:7)? How does Jesus’ blood cleanse us from sin (1 John 2:2; Hebrews 9:1-14; 10:1-18)?

5. Since we aren’t sinless even if we walk in the light, what must we keep doing (1:9)? Is it possible to walk in the light and confess sin without spending time with God? Why or why not?

6. What does the need for propitiation and atonement tell you about God and yourself? What difference does it make to you that you have “an advocate with the Father” (2:1) who is righteous, faithful and just?

7. We are so forever grateful and love that Jesus would endure the cross for the joy of redeeming and rescuing us (Heb 12:2). What are some other things that you love about Jesus?
